Coffee Drinks: Standards, Ratios, and Distinctions

Coffee Drinks: Standards, Ratios, and Distinctions

In the world of coffee, terms are often used loosely—cappuccino, latte, flat white sound familiar, yet behind each drink lie precise parameters, ratios, and intentions.

For the customer, it’s a matter of preference.

For the professional—it’s a matter of consistency, clarity, and respect for standards.

In a bar setting, these distinctions aren’t about taste.

They’re about structure: volume, coffee-to-milk ratio, texture, temperature, and intended experience.

Each drink is defined clearly—by how it’s composed and by the role it plays in the ritual of coffee.

1. Espresso

  • Volume: 25–30 ml

  • Brew ratio: 1:2 (coffee to liquid)

  • Extraction time: 25–30 seconds

  • Profile: concentrated body, distinct acidity, balanced finish

  • Purpose: to express the full flavor profile of the blend or single origin, without dilution

2. Americano

  • Composition: espresso + hot water

  • Ratio: 1:3 to 1:5

  • Volume: 120–150 ml

  • Purpose: to soften espresso intensity while preserving its core characteristics

3. Cappuccino

  • Composition: espresso (30 ml) + milk (~85 ml) + foam

  • Volume: 150–180 ml

  • Milk temperature: 55–65°C

  • Texture: silky microfoam

  • Purpose: balance between coffee, milk, and air—no one element dominates

4. Caffè Latte

  • Composition: espresso + milk + thin layer of foam

  • Ratio: 1:4 to 1:6

  • Volume: 240–300 ml

  • Purpose: a smoother, milk-forward experience with subtle coffee presence

5. Flat White

  • Composition: double ristretto (or espresso) + microfoam

  • Volume: 160–180 ml

  • Difference from cappuccino: less milk, less foam, more concentrated coffee

  • Purpose: for those seeking a creamy texture with a clear coffee core

6. Espresso Macchiato

  • Composition: espresso marked with 1–2 teaspoons of milk foam

  • Name meaning: “macchiato” = “stained” in Italian

  • Purpose: to lightly soften espresso’s intensity without dilution

7. Cortado

  • Composition: espresso (30 ml) + warm milk (30 ml)

  • Ratio: 1:1

  • Volume: 60 ml

  • Serving: traditionally in a glass

  • Purpose: to combine espresso strength with milk texture, without foam

8. Mocha (Mochaccino)

  • Composition: espresso + chocolate + milk

  • Ratio: approximately 1:1:2

  • Volume: 200–250 ml

  • Purpose: a drink at the edge of coffee and dessert—sweet, creamy, and coffee-driven

Understanding coffee isn’t reserved for professionals behind the bar.

It’s for anyone who wants to know what’s in their cup — and why it matters.

Each drink, from the concise espresso to the comforting flat white, carries a logic. A structure.

The ratios aren’t arbitrary. The textures aren’t accidental.

They’re decisions — crafted, measured, and repeated daily by baristas who take their craft seriously.

For customers, this clarity leads to better choices.

For coffee professionals, it ensures consistency, quality, and credibility.

And for brands, it reinforces what specialty should stand for: intention, not improvisation.

At CAMBIARE , we believe that knowing the difference between a latte and a cortado isn’t trivia.

It’s part of speaking the language of coffee fluently — with respect, with precision, and with care.
